Eating Disorder Therapy
Eating Disorder Therapy in Kitchener-Waterloo
Eating Disorders are serious, complex, health concerns. Regardless if an individual is diagnosed with anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder, or other specified eating disorders, all can significantly affect a person’s quality of life. There are many factors that may lead to the development of an eating disorder: biological, psychological, and social. Unfortunately, eating disorders remain a stigmatized illness, and many of those who suffer do not receive the medical and psychological supports necessary to recover.
Supporting those with Eating Disorders in Kitchener-Waterloo
Recovery from an eating disorder is possible. I use evidence-based approaches to support individuals with an eating disorder.
For children and adolescents, family-based therapy is the recommended first line of treatment. Adolescent focused therapy is another treatment model used to help youths and teens with eating disorders.
For adults, cognitive behaviour therapy is the recommended treatment model. Additionally, components of dialectical behaviour therapy and emotion focused therapy may be explored as potential treatment options.
It is important that individuals who have been diagnosed with an eating disorder have the required medical and nutritional supports. There are dietitians in the region that I specifically endorse due to their specialty working in the eating disorder field. It is required that you follow up with your primary care provider while in treatment.
